Sumner Memorial High School

SULLIVAN – Principal Sally A. Leighton has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2004 at Sumner Memorial High School. Graduation exercises will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 10, in Clint Ritchie Gymnasium.

George H. Schaefer, son of Bonnie Sparks and the late George Schaefer of Sullivan, has been named valedictorian. He plans to attend Oberlin College and major in cinema studies.

He is a member of the National Honor Society, student council, math team and the mentoring program. He was a Boys State delegate and has participated in Cabaret and the Mr. Sumner contest. He has been a member of the tennis, golf, cross country, basketball, baseball and indoor track teams. Schaefer was the recipient of the State Heisman Award and the Samsung American Legion Award, Maine winner and national finalist.

Dorothy C. Alley, daughter of Jan and John Alley of Gouldsboro, has been named salutatorian. She plans to attend the University of Maine in the fall.

Alley is vice president of the National Honor Society and is a member of the of the Student Council. She also is the senior class president. She has been involved in band and jazz band, and she was chosen for the District VI Honors Festival. She has participated in the varsity basketball and cross country teams, the film committee, the mentoring team and the math team. She also was a creator of the Chem-Free committee. Her honors include PVC C/D All Academic Team Award, Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship, Maine Scholars Achievement Award, Society of Women Engineers Math and Science Award, Wendy’s High School Heisman Award State finalist and Maine Principals’ Association Principals’ Award. She also has participated in community service projects.

Caroline E. Fickett, daughter of Elizabeth and David Fickett of Winter Harbor, has been named First Honor Essayist. She plans to attend Emerson College and major in journalism.

Fickett is a member of the National Honor Society, student council, civil rights team and math team. She has participated in drama, the mentoring program, the Tiger Tribune, tennis, sailing, prom committee, Cabaret, band and French club. She is a published author, a recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa award and a member of the National Art Honor Society.

Jill S. Bryant, daughter of Peggy and Charles Cole of Winter Harbor, has been named Second Honor Essayist. She plans to attend Johnson and Wales University and major in hospitality administration. She is president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Student Council and a recipient of the Hoby Award. She has participated in West End Cafe and drama and has been the basketball manager. She was active in the mentoring program, the prom committee, the yearbook staff, the tennis team and the French club.
