Local students win science fair awards

ORONO – More than 96 high school students received awards at the 58th Annual Maine State Science and Technology Fair May 15 at the University of Maine.

The Maine Principals’ Association sponsored the event in partnership with National Semiconductor and Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland and the University of Maine.

Local winners in the talks and demonstrations categories were:

. Grades 11-12 Psychology: Kristina Caldwell, Bangor Christian Schools, third.

. Grades 11-12 Physics: Erin Cormier, Bangor Christian Schools, second.

. Grades 11-12 Chemistry: Scott Knightly, Bangor Christian Schools, third.

. Grades 11-12 Biology-Consumer: Lea Simmons, Bangor Christian Schools, third.

. Grades 9-12 Technology: Joshua Wright, Bangor Christian Schools, third.

. Grades 9-12 Institutionally Aided: Kayle Shapero, Bangor High School, first.

. Grades 9-10 Psychology: Nellie Wood, Hampden Academy, first.

. Grades 9-10 Consumer-Biology: Aimee Putnam, Bangor Christian Schools, second.

Winners in the exhibit categories were:

. Grades 11-12 Psychology: Anthony Cole, Bangor Christian Schools, second.

. Grades 11-12 Environmental-Earth Science: Jessica Dougherty, Bangor Christian Schools, second; and Shaun Moores, Bangor Christian Schools, third.

. Grades 11-12 Consumer: Kaitlyn French, Bangor Christian Schools, second; and Stephen Arthers, Bangor Christian Schools, third.

. Grades 11-12 Chemistry: Heather Holmes, Bangor Christian Schools, first; Kayla Sherman, Bangor Christian Schools, second; and Aaron Wilson, Bangor Christian Schools, third.

. Grades 11-12 Biology: Chris Standley, Hampden Academy, first; and Jennifer McFarland, Bangor Christian Schools, second.
