Legislators to battle in Governor’s Cup Charity Bass tourney

Legislators from around the state won’t be casting votes this weekend; they’ll be casting fishing line to raise money for charity.

The eighth annual Governor’s Cup Charity Bass tournament will take place on Lake Cobbossee in Litchfield and nearly 20 senators, representatives, legislative staffers and the governor are expected to participate.

The catch, measure and release tournament will pit members of the House against members of the Senate. At stake is $1,000, which will go to the winning team’s charity of choice.

The day begins at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast at the Lakeside Motel and Marina in East Winthrop. Teams will fish through the morning, from 8 a.m.-noon.

The tournament is open to all legislators.

Free fishing days approach

A Father’s Day weekend tradition will be observed next week as anglers will be allowed to fish for free on June 19 and 20.

Any person, except for those whose license has been revoked or suspended, may fish without a license on those days. All other fishing regulations apply.

Moosehorn youth derby on tap

The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge will hold its seventh annual children’s fishing derby on June 19.

The derby will be held at the headquarters pond at Cobscook Bay State Park, and will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event is open to children under age 16. Hot dogs, chips and soda will be provided. Children should bring their poles, tackle and bait.

Two-day black powder shoot set

The Eye of the Hawk club will host its second annual two-day black powder shoot today and Sunday.

The events will begin at 9 a.m. each day and will end at 4. All events will be held at the Knox County Fish and Game Association in Union.

The club will have a variety of events including a line shoot with all regular targets at 25, 50 and 100 yards. A novelty shoot and a skeet shoot are also scheduled.

To get to the Eye of the Hawk shoot, look for the Beaver Lodge sign on Route 235 north of East Union.

York shoot scheduled

The York County Fish and Game Club will host a black powder shoot on Sunday.
