SOUTH PORTLAND – State officials Thursday made a recruiting pitch for lifeguards, saying there is an unprecedented number of vacancies at state parks as the summer season approaches.
At a news conference at the municipal pool, the Bureau of Parks and Lands said it was trying to recruit lifeguards to fill two dozen positions that are still open.
Qualifications including current lifeguard, first aid and rescuer CPR certifications and the ability to swim 500 yards in less than 10 minutes.
“The good news is that people who don’t have their lifeguard certification and are interested in applying still have time to be certified,” said Gloria Allen, the bureau’s lifeguard coordinator.
There are openings at 13 state parks, including such popular ones as Popham Beach, Sebago Lake and Crescent Beach.
“Working as a Maine state park lifeguard is a great summer job that affords employees an opportunity to gain leadership experience and build their resume,” said Ron Lovaglio, commissioner of the Department of Conservation.
Those interested are advised to contact the Bureau of Parks and Lands.
The lifeguard season begins June 3.
