Grimes helps Brewer sweep Penquis in opener

BREWER – Matt Grimes’ RBI single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Brewer by Penquis 5-4 for a sweep of an American Legion baseball doubleheader at Heddericg Field Sunday night.

Brewer won the first game 7-4.

Andy Otis and Nye Gifford chipped in with RBI doubles for Brewer in the second game and J.T. Davis came on in the seventh to earn the win after Andrew Patterson pitched a strong game.

Danny White and Dan Kane each notched an RBI single for Penquis.

In the first game, Kevin McAvoy doubled and singled for Brewer and Joe Robichaud added a two-run double. Pat Moran chipped in with an RBI single.

Josh Withee slammed an RBI triple for Penquis and James Gray doubled.

At Old Town, Ryan Levesque drove in two runs on a double and a single as the Twins earned the win.

Brad Goody chipped in with a double and a single for one RBI. Dusty Thomas singled twice and drove in a run.

Jeremy Ham and Matt Work each hit a single for Lincoln.

Trenton sweeps Hampden

At Hampden, Mark Clapp had a solid day with two singles, a double, a triple and a solo homer to help lead the Trenton Acadians to a doubleheader sweep of Hampden Sunday.

Trenton won the first game 4-3 and took the second 13-4.

Collin Henry also came up big with a two-run homer in the second game and a six-hit pitching performance plus a two-run double in the first game.

In the second game, Adam Cousins doubled twice and singled for Trenton.

Hampden’s Corey Archer hit a solo home run and double while Nate Ellis had two singles and a triple for two RBIs.

In the first game, Joel Neill hit three singles for Hampden. Eric Libby had a triple and double, and Ian Lee hit an RBI triple.

Quirk, Montville split

At Belfast, Chris Carman hit a single to plate Pasco Grove in the bottom of the ninth as Montville earned a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday. Quirk won the second game 1-0.

In the first game, Montville’s Nate Hall struck out 17 and scattered six hits. Grove finished with two singles and a double. Greg Thayer doubled, singled and drove in a run.

Quirk’s Deric Prescott hit a solo homer in the third. Aaron Largay singled twice and Adam Sheehan had two singles.

In the second game, Quirk’s Travis Tripp scored on Marty Machrea’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh for the winning run. Tripp doubled to get into scoring position.

Hall and George Tripp each singled twice for Montville.

Electroloux sweeps Belfast

At Searsport, Mark Farnham pitched eight innings and struck out 13 to help Electroloux earn an extra-inning win in the second game against Belfast, 8-4.

Electro took the first game as well, 7-6.

In the opener, Justin Page doubled, singled and knocked in a run and Mark Farnham singled twice for the winners.

Matt Mercier had a triple and single for Belfast while Bob Withey singled twice.

In the nightcap, Jeff Ashee hit two singles and a double for Belfast.
