Castine ceremony marks Penobscot show opening

On Wednesday, June 30, the Castine Historical Society will hold the opening ceremony for the Penobscot Expedition exhibit at 5 p.m. at Castine Unitarian Church. This year marks the 225th anniversary of the military engagement. The speaker will be William M. Fowler Jr., director of the Massachusetts Historical Society.

A reception will be held afterward for members and guests at the Abbott School, where the new permanent exhibit will occupy the former gift shop area.

The exhibit was given to the society by Frank Hatch in memory of his father, Francis W. Hatch.

In addition, the society will offer a summer exhibit, “Penobscot Expedition Aftermath: Castine, 1779-1814.”

The Castine Historical Society has more than 400 members. You can join for $15 per individual, $25 family, $50 sustaining, sent to Castine Historical Society, P.O. Box 238, Castine 04421.

Membership includes a subscription to the Castine Visitor, which this month included Mark Honey’s essay on “Selling Cars in Castine: 1910-1983.”

The society also offers the opportunity to purchase a memorial brick for the walkway at the Abbott School to remember a loved one, friend or pet. Each brick is $50, with room for three lines, 12 letters or spaces per line. Use the

above address to order a brick.

You also will want to know that the society will hold its annual house and garden tour 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, July 29, in Castine. Pick up tickets at Leila Day’s Antique Shop or at Castine Realty, or call 326-4118 or 326-9392.

While we’re noting special events, activities to mark the 225th anniversary of the Penobscot Exhibition will be held Aug. 13-15.

On Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., enactors will encamp at Fort Madison and Fort George. At 8 p.m. Professor Alaric Faulkner will speak on the search for the evidence of the expedition in the BIW lecture room on the Maine Maritime Academy campus.
