BANGOR – A woman who was shot in the leg at her home in Lee on Friday died Sunday morning at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Rosemarie Dyer was 52.

Her husband, Carl Dyer, 50, remained in Penobscot County Jail, where he is being held on $20,000 cash bail after being charged Friday with aggravated assault.

The charge will be upgraded as a result of his wife’s death, but no decision on the new charge is likely until Dyer makes his initial court appearance Tuesday, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Detectives plan to review results of a pending autopsy and ballistics tests along with evidence gathered by detectives Saturday from the couple’s home on a dirt road about a quarter-mile off Route 168, McCausland said.

Rosemarie Dyer suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of a single shotgun wound to the thigh, McCausland said earlier Friday. She initially was taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in nearby Lincoln before being transferred to EMMC on Friday afternoon.

Dyer underwent emergency surgery at EMMC on Friday but died at about 11 a.m. Sunday, according to a hospital official.

Penobscot County deputies went to the scene after the initial call, which was made by Carl Dyer, shortly after 3 p.m. Friday.

“It’s not clear as to what sparked the violence,” McCausland said. “We need to figure out exactly what happened inside that house.”

He said detectives were interviewing people who knew the couple.

“Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies and state police troopers have been to the home a number of times, and some of those were domestic-related,” McCausland said.
