Chamber of Commerce scholarship

BANGOR – Shalise Forti of Bangor, a recent graduate of Bangor High School, is one of four students to receive a $1,500 scholarship from the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. Her high school activities included advanced placement classes, Key Club, Amnesty International and Teens Against Domestic Violence. “I’m not smart,” she said. “I just work hard.”

The other recipients are Katarina de Khan of Westport, Dennis Rogeski of Fort Fairfield and Alison Norton of East Machias.

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce raises funds for its scholarship program with an annual golf tournament, which will take place 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 10, at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.

Maine Education Services administers the scholarship process. Applications are available online at www.mesfoundation.com.

National Outdoor Leadership School

LANDER, Wyo. – Maria Millard of Orono completed a 22-day sailing course at the National Outdoor Leadership School last winter off California’s Baja peninsula. She learned to maneuver a small boat, navigation, sail and line handling, and anchoring techniques. She spent time in classes on the beach, lived with minimal impact on the land and camped ashore at night. To learn more about the school, visit www.nols.edu.

Perkins School for the Blind

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Mark Bush of Glenburn graduated recently from the Perkins School of the Blind in Watertown, Mass. His interests include music, dancing and working out. After attending a summer program at Perkins, he plans to return to Maine.

Phillips Exeter Academy

EXETER, N.H. – Local graduates of Phillips Exeter Academy on June 6 were:

. Seth Hayward, son of Thomas Hayward of Holden and Ann Hanlon of Hampden.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Michael Newman of Bangor received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from American International College on May 23.

WASHINGTON – Emily Smith of Bangor was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at American University.

Boston University

BOSTON – Carl Russell and Matthew Warner of Holden have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Boston University.

Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK – Several local students graduated from Bowdoin College May 29:

. Joshua Atwood of Hampden with a bachelor’s degree in biology-environmental studies. A graduate of Hampden Academy, he received the Community Service Award in environmental studies.

. Patrick Woodcock of Hampden with a bachelor’s degree in government. He is a graduate of Hampden Academy.

. Chad Pelton of Levant with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. A graduate of Hermon High School, he received Maine teacher certification in physical science.

. Kathryn Sullivan of Veazie with a bachelor’s degree cum laude in economics. A graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Sullivan was awarded the Noyes Political Economy Prize, and the Paul Andrew Walker Prize honoring the ability and effort of a member of the Bowdoin Orient staff.

. Timothy Mathien of Veazie with a bachelor’s degree cum laude in economics and government. He is a graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School.

ST. LOUIS – Kelley Pendleton of Bangor was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Logan College of Chiropractic.

Mount Ida College

NEWTON, Mass. – Laurie Sanborn of Alton graduated magna cum laude from Mount Ida College on May 21. She received an associate degree in funeral science.

HENNIKER, N.H. – Erica Hamlin of Alton was named to the dean’s list at New England College.

Norwich University

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Joshua Frederik of Hermon graduated from Norwich University June 9 with a bachelor’s degree in management.

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Area students named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Saint Michael’s College are Megan Smith, daughter of Ivan and Bridget Smith of Eddington; Sean O’Connell, son of Kevin and Elaine O’Connell of Hampden; and Natalie Skall, daughter of Philip and Mary Drew of Orono.

State University of West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Benjamin Preston has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at State University of West Georgia. He is the son of Ray and Patty Preston of Winterport.

Texas Tech University

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sarah Veits graduated from Texas Tech University May 5 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations and management. She is the daughter of Harold and Lee Veits of Mobile, Ala., and Carol Veits of Orrington.

University of Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Kendall Tracewski of Old Town was inducted recently into Alpha Lamda Delta, a national honor society that recognizes superior scholarship in a student’s first year at the university.

University of Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Lisa Spencer of Old Town graduated from the University of Rhode Island during commencement ceremonies May 23.
