Schools

Bangor Christian School

BANGOR – Steven Blake, a recent graduate of Bangor Christian School, has been awarded a Sam Walton Community Scholarship. He was nominated by the Wal-Mart in Bangor.

Blake, who will attend the University of Maine this fall to study civil engineering, was the salutatorian of his class.

He was a member of the soccer, baseball and math teams, and was named to the United States Achievement Academy in English. Blake also is an Eagle Scout.

Eddington School

EDDINGTON – Don Spencer has been named the new principal of Eddington School.

For the past 16 years, he had served as a fifth-grade teacher at Holbrook School in Holden.

Prior to that position, Spencer taught at St. Mary’s School, now All Saints in Bangor. He has a master’s degree in leadership from the University of Maine.

Eddington has 165 elementary pupils and 30 enrolled in the new preschool program.

Hampden Academy

HAMPDEN – Andrea Palmer, a recent graduate of Hampden Academy, has been awarded a Sam Walton Community Scholarship. She was nominated by the Wal-Mart in Bangor.

Palmer has been civil rights team president, math team captain, book club founder and president, a member of Voices Unlimited concert choir, a chamber singer, a member of District V honors choir and a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, leadership team, safety committee and French club.

In addition, Palmer has volunteered 500 hours at the Maine Discovery Museum, 200 hours at Eastern Maine Medical Center and 80 hours with Landmark Volunteers. She also has been a peer mentor and peer tutor at Hampden Academy.

Palmer will attend Dartmouth College to study linguistics.

Holbrook School

HOLDEN – Gary Gonyar has been named the new principal of Holbrook School.

Gonyar began teaching in 1983 at East Grand High School in Danforth and most recently was employed by the Brewer School Department, where he taught middle school math before taking an administrative position with the kindergarten to grade two program.

For the past two years, Gonyar was principal of Pendleton and Capri Street schools in Brewer. He has a master’s degree from the University of Maine.

Holbrook School is part of SAD 63 and has 300 middle school pupils from Clifton, Eddington and Holden.

Cianchette Brothers Scholarships

PITTSFIELD – The Cianbro Charitable Foundation has awarded Cianchette Brothers Scholarships to 21 college students who are children of Cianchette team members.

Area recipients include:

. Joshua Philbrick, Hampden.

. Amanda Rollins, Exeter.

. Rachel Stone, Newport.

. Jordan Warren, Newport.

Colleges

Clark University

WORCESTER, Mass. – Area students named to the dean’s list at Clark University include:

. Catherine M. Rohn of Brewer, first honors. She attended Brewer High School.

. Maria L. Frati of Hampden, second honors. She attended Hampden Academy.

Drew University

MADISON, N.J. – Area students named to the dean’s list at Drew University include:

. Jordan Ecker of Brewer.

. Sarah Marquez of Orono.

North Central College

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The North Central College board of trustees elected five new members at its meeting, including John Giannini, class of 1984, head men’s basketball coach at the University of Maine. He lives in Bangor with his wife, Donna Fuhr Giannini, class of 1985, and their two children.

Named the 19th head coach of the University of Maine basketball team in August 1996, Giannini came to UMaine after seven years at Rowan University in New Jersey, where he led his squad to the NCAA Division III national championship in 1996. The championship earned him Sears Division III Coach of the Year honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Giannini is a former member of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Regional Advisory Committee. He currently serves on the NABC Congress.

A Chicago native, Giannini is a graduate of Fenwick High School. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in psychology at NCC, he earned a master’s degree in physical education at the University of North Texas and a doctorate in kinesiology at the University of Illinois.

Roger Williams University

BRISTOL, R.I. – Melissa Andrews of Bucksport, Amy Hutchins of Orrington and Kevin Lewis of Veazie have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Roger Williams University.

St. Joseph’s College of Maine

STANDISH – Marianne Alley has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at St. Joseph’s College of Maine. She is the daughter of John and Jane Alley of Hampden.

University of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Area students who graduated from the University of Vermont on May 23 are:

. Lori Robichaud of Hampden, with a bachelor’s degree in professional nursing.

. Jessica Ames of Milford, with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

. Carey Groleau of Winterport, cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in studio art.

Area students named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Vermont are Anna Liberatore of Bangor, Garrett Martin of Holden, Meghan Sekera of Eddington and Sophie Gray of Orono.

Wheaton College

WHEATON, Ill. – Jonathon Chrisos of Brewer graduated magna cum laude during commencement ceremonies at Wheaton College recently. He received a bachelor’s degree in communication. He also was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the college.

Molly Wiebe, a member of the Class of 2004 at Wheaton College, was elected to the Wheaton chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She also was on the dean’s list for the spring semester. Wiebe is a resident of Bangor and a graduate of Bangor High School. She is the daughter of John and Martha Wiebe.

Area students named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Wheaton College are Jason Estes, Hampden; Jonathan McBee, Hampden; Aislinn Stetson of Holden; and Gretchen Gavett, Orono.
