MOUNT DESERT – Martha Stewart had some uninvited guests show up at her Skylands estate in Seal Harbor Thursday, and that was not a good thing.

Stewart was working in her New York City office when she learned that two Rhode Island men had been arrested for criminal trespass on her Maine property.

Police said they are treating the case like any other criminal trespass case, yet they withheld most of the basic information on the incident, and the district attorney was brought into the case almost immediately.

Personnel at the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth said they were told to refer all questions to District Attorney Michael Povich, who could not be reached Thursday.

Stewart, herself preparing to go to jail on felony charges, also would not comment.

“Talk to the police. That will be fine,” Stewart said curtly from her New York City office.

Mount Desert Police Chief James Willis would not say whether the men gained entrance into Stewart’s house overlooking Somes Sound.

“They were arrested for going on her property, and that’s all I’m going [to say]” until Povich reviews the case.

According to Willis, police picked up the pair on Main Street in Northeast Harbor at about 3 p.m.

“We are treating this case like we would any criminal trespass case,” Willis said. “We need to do a thorough investigation like we always do, and that will take a few days.”

Arrested were David Cimalore, 44, of Westerly, R.I., and Joseph Moretti, 37, of Cranston, R.I.

By 6 p.m., bail had been set for both of the men, but they still had not been booked at the county jail, according to jail officials, who did not reveal the amount of the bail.
