KENNEBUNKPORT – President Bush is expected take a break from his re-election campaign to attend his nephew’s wedding next weekend at the family’s coastal compound.

White House spokesman Ken Liasius said the president would stay overnight Friday at the family compound on Walker’s Point after speaking at a picnic in New Hampshire. Bush plans to return to Washington Sunday, Liasius said.

The president’s nephew, George P. Bush, 28, is the son of Gov. Jeb Bush. He is the eldest of the Florida governor’s three children and the grandson of former President George H.W. Bush.

The groom, whose mother was born in Mexico, was the sensation of the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia after delivering an address in Spanish and English that praised the president’s commitment to diversity.

He also made dozens of campaign speeches in 2000, appearing in a series of bilingual television ads aimed at young Hispanic voters.

At the time, he was identified as a hot commodity in Republican politics, and many suspect he eventually could follow family members into a political career.

Since 2000, President Bush’s nephew has worked on his father’s re-election campaign and attended law school at the University of Texas. His fiancee is reportedly a classmate.

A spokesman at the Bush estate in Kennebunkport would not comment on the private affair.

In addition to the two presidents who share his first and last name, George P. Bush is named for his great-grandfather, Prescott Bush, a Republican senator from Connecticut in the 1950s.

“He definitely has the right genes,” said Joseph Agostini, spokesman for the Florida Republican Party. “He comes from a good family.”
