Baker earns spot in PGA’s Deutsche Bank Championship

NORTON, Mass. – Mike Baker, the former assistant pro at Bangor Municipal Golf Course who is now at the Sugarloaf Golf Club, has qualified for the PGA’s Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC of Boston here.

Baker, 42, sank a 20-foot putt on the second extra hole of a four-man playoff at the TPC of Boston to earn his spot.

Jeff Martin of Alpine CC (R.I.) birdied the next hole and also qualified.

Baker and Martin each shot a 70 over 18 holes.

Forty-four section professionals battled for the two spots in the Sept. 3-6 PGA Tour event.

Martin also qualified for the New England Open in September while Jeff Seavey of the Samoset Golf Club in Rockport qualified with a 72.

Meanwhile, at the Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston, Mass., John Hickson and Shawn Arsenault of the Sunday River G.C. in Newry are in a six-way tie for second after the first round of the NEPGA Pro-Assistant championship.

Hickson and Arsenault shot a 65 and trail the four leading teams by one stroke.

Final round tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
