On May 17, the Fin and Feather Club concludes a busy winter of fund raising and promoting sportsman’s rights and interests. The 18th annual Adrian Batson Award will be presented to a worthy sportsman who “has provided outstanding contributions to the needs and the interests of his fellow sportsmen.”

The funds are used to send three youngsters to Maine Conservation Camp in Princeton; the free Family Fishing Day in February; for “Tracks,” a conservation bulletin to area grade schools; a Stearns graduate scholarship; and hunter safety courses.

Raising these funds was made much easier because of the generous and much appreciated donation by Tom Hennessey of a print of one of his beautiful paintings: “Log Drive on the West Branch of the Penobscot.” The drawing went to and is treasured by Cynthia Martin of Millinocket.

Another important fund raiser is in progress for the club’s legal suit against Bowater/GNP for breach of contract. This has been done because they have reinstated gate fees, when in fact Maine citizens were granted “free day uses” to their roads and lands in accordance with the 30-year license and the 1993 agreement with FERC and the Fin and Feather Club.

This fall, the club will have a 31-gun drawing. In the month of October, one gun will be drawn each day and the winner’s name will go back into the cage. Thereby a ticket-holder can win more than one gun on the same ticket.

For tickets, call Ray Campbell 723-8054 or Gordon McCauslin 723-5651.

Guest speaker at the May 17 awards will be Dr. Knud Hermanson, who is recognized as an expert in land easements and access to lands and waters in Maine.
