ON THE RUN

Schaefer Memorial 5K a fast, flat tribute race

Becky O’Keefe will be on the run during the next couple of weeks.

In addition to getting ready for another cross country season at Sumner High School in East Sullivan, she’ll co-direct the third annual George Schaefer Memorial 5K along with Roxanne Malloy.

“Yeah, I’ve been pretty busy,” O’Keefe said with a chuckle.

The race, which is run along scenic Schoodic Point, will take place Saturday at 8 a.m., starting with a kids’ race. The 5K will go off at 8:30. It’s held in conjunction with the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival.

George Schaefer Sr. was a parent of a Sumner High cross country runner, George Schaefer Jr. The elder Schaefer died a few years back, and that’s when the race was founded.

“It’s a way of recognizing George,” O’Keefe said. “Members of the team and the boosters club wanted to remember him somehow.”

The out-and-back course is flat and fast.

“It starts in Woonsqueaq Harbor, goes along the shore for about a mile, and eventually runs into the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park,” O’Keefe said.

O’Keefe said approximately 138 people took part in the 5K last year and 20 in the mile fun run. Caleb Paul of Harrington won last year’s race in 16 minutes, 21 seconds. Another Narraguagus alum, Anne Favolise, was the women’s champ in 18:56.

George Schaefer Jr. was injured in an accident the same year his father died. He ran the race last year for the first time and plans on running again this year.

Those seeking more information about the race may contact O’Keefe (963-5811) or Malloy (266-5478).

Hintz hammers Pony 5K record

Make no mistake about it, Cassie Hintz just isn’t slowing down.

The Old Town High School junior-to-be continued her strong summer road racing season in Dover-Foxcroft last weekend at the Pony Pride 5K.

Hintz finished third overall in 17:15, a women’s course record. She was only 12 seconds behind second-place finisher Eric Rudolph (17:03). Tim Wakeland of Dedham won the race in 16:24.

Hintz and hundreds of Penobscot Valley Conference runners will open the high school cross country season Sept. 4 at the Ellsworth Invitational.

Finishing Kick: In addition to the George Schaefer Memorial, runners have plenty of other racing options this weekend.

On Saturday, you can head to Houlton for the fourth annual County Open Relay/Half Marathon at 8 a.m., to Blue Hill for the Mountain to the Sea Triathlon at 10 a.m. or to East Machias for the Senior Class 5K at 8:30 a.m.

Sunday’s lone race on tap is in Bristol, where the Alvin Sproul 10K and 1-mile fun will be held at the Bristol Consolidated School. The fun run will start at 8:30 a.m. and the 10K at 9:15.
