University of Maine men’s basketball coach John Giannini reportedly is the next person on the list as La Salle University resumes its search for a new head coach, according to published reports.
La Salle has not officially approached Giannini, who interviewed there in 1991, in regard to the job. The school was forced to reopen its search Saturday after Pennsylvania coach Fran Dunphy turned down the position.
“As of earlier [Sunday] afternoon, neither coach Giannini nor [athletic director] Patrick Nero had been contacted by La Salle,” said UMaine athletics spokesman Brent Williamson.
School officials usually ask permission to speak with a coach who is under contract elsewhere.
Giannini’s teams have posted a 125-11 overall record (.530) in eight seasons at UMaine, including America East title game appearances in 2004 and 2002.
