Machias Memorial High School
MACHIAS – Terry D. Atwood, principal of Machias Memorial High School, has announced the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2001. Graduation exercises will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at the high school gymnasium. Senior banquet will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the Rose M. Gaffney School.
Micah Preston Hall, son of Karl and Marlene Hall of Machias, is valedictorian. He received the 2001 National Association of Secondary School Principals Leadership Award, the MPA Principal’s Award, the Princeton Book Award of Maine and Maine Scholars Achievement Award. He was a semifinalist in the Toyota Community Scholars Program and a finalist in the Elks National Foundation Scholars Program. He earned highest averages in Advanced Placement and honor courses and was chosen for outstanding student awards and was American Mathematics Competition winner. He was a member of the National Honor Society and vice president of the NHS, president of Student Council and is on the MMHS Building Council, is a Model State Senator, member of the Chess Team, co-editor of The Bulldog Reporter and took part in Close-up Washington, D.C., was elected senator of Boys State and a member of the 2000 State Math Team. He was a past class president and served three years on the Student Council.
He was on Eastern Maine Class D and DAC championship soccer teams and holds the school record for most career goals scored. He was speaking captain his senior year and voted All Downeast Athletic Conference, All Eastern Maine Class D, and All Eastern Maine State in 1999 and 2000. He was a starter for the MMHS varsity baseball team and was a 2001 Scholar Athlete.
He was a Pee Wee Soccer volunteer, coach and referee, organizer and director of the 1998 and 1999 Machias Youth Soccer Camp and Summer 1999 Machias Youth Soccer League. He was sports director of the 1998 and 1999 Machias Recreation Department Day Camps. He was a CASA team mentor at the Rose M. Gaffney Elementary School. He will attend Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., to study history or law.
Margaret Mae Phipps, daughter of Bert and Bonnie Phipps of Machias, is salutatorian. She earned highest academic honors all four years, was a National Merit semifinalist, received the Maine Scholars Achievement Award, held highest class averages and several outstanding student awards. She was chosen for the National Honor Society and was a member of the planning committee of the 1999 VOICES Annual Arts and Literature Conference, attended the 1999 Close Up Foundation Seminar in Washington, D.C., was 1999 Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Ambassador, and a delegate to Dirigo Girls State 2000. She was a class president, treasurer and Student Council member. She is president of chorus and co-editor of The Margaretta, and writes for The Bulldog Reporter. She was a four-year member of the MMHS mock trial team and was co-captain in her senior year.
She was on the varsity basketball and volleyball teams and received coach’s awards and recognition as a DAC Volleyball All-Star.
She sings and plays piano and has taken part in many recitals and concerts and shared her talents at sporting events, graduations and holiday ceremonies. She was a member of Select Chorus and a featured soloist at Washington County and District VI music festivals. She has shown several artworks and has several pieces displayed at the school.
She will attend the University of Maine at Machias to study a double major in English and interdisciplinary fine arts.
