Can do better than LNG

The editorial, “After the Vote” (BDN, Aug, 21-22), misses the point. The proposed site of the liquefied natural gas terminal at Pleasant Point on Passamaquoddy Bay is indefensible for two compelling reasons.

First, the site is located in the midst of a pristine environment which is both a rare treasure and one of the last remaining areas of its kind on the East Coast. The hard work of many committed individuals and organizations would be undone by having this facility located where proposed as the impact of its visual, noise and light pollution is incompatible with the area’s pristine quality.

Second, a large industrial facility of this type is not an appropriate neighbor for the people who now live, work or recreate on Passamaquoddy and Cobscook bays and their environs.

As you point out, we need more good jobs in our local communities, but not at the expense of traditional jobs and nontraditional commerce that rely on the pristine nature of our environment to flourish such as the seafood industry, tourism, ecotourism, redevelopment and revitalization of local towns and the growing influx of those seeking a better quality of life.
