BROOKS – Residents voted 38-17 at a special town meeting on Saturday to build a four-bay fire station, rather than a three-bay version, on Route 139.
The town approved borrowing up to $236,000 to pay for the new building.
Brooks had earlier landed a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state Department of Economic and Community Development for the project, Selectman Linda Lord said Sunday.
Residents discussed the four-bay and three-bay options for more than an hour, Lord said.
“There was an excellent discussion,” she said. “People asked excellent questions.”
Residents also approved an article that will allow the town to use $27,500 from the sale of two town-owned properties toward the construction project.
The town has been negotiating with Dunbar and Brawn of Bangor. The firm submitted the lowest bid for the project, Lord said. Construction is expected to begin in the coming months.
“I certainly hope so,” she said.
