LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – One day after getting shelled by Bangor’s offense, the New Jersey Jackals clinched the Northeast League’s South Division second-half title with a 6-0 shutout against the Lumberjacks Monday night.
The shutout means New Jersey (23-16 and 49-37 overall) won both the first and second half division titles. Bangor, which has clinched a wild-card playoff spot and is battling Quebec for the North Division second-half title, is now 27-13 in the second half and 52-34 overall.
New Jersey’s Joel Bennett scattered seven hits over eight innings of work to improve to 6-3. He notched nine strikeouts and issued three walks.
The Jackals got all the runs they’d need with solo home runs by Jay LaFlair and Darren Ciraco in the third and fifth innings, respectively. Wilton Veras doubled twice to lead the offense.
Josh Tranum led Bangor with a double and a single. Ben Fox (1-1) took the loss after throwing seven innings.
Bangor opens a regular season-ending six-game series at home Wednesday night with the first of three against North Shore, a possible first-round playoff opponent.
