ORONO – Marie Andree-Canuel headed the ball past Carolina keeper Jaclyn Stoll off a corner kick 15 minutes and 26 seconds into the game and Maine made the goal stick for a 1-0 women’s soccer win over Coastal Carolina Friday afternoon.
Marie-Michelle Bouchard recorded the assist. Tanya Adorno made two saves on six shots for the 3-0 Black Bears.
Stoll stopped four of 12 shots for 1-1 Coastal Carolina.

UMaine splits
At Orono, the Black Bears split a pair of games at the Sea-Sun Invitational at Memorial Gym. The Black Bears (1-1) topped Fairfield, 3-2 (31-29, 28-30, 30-28, 17-30, 15-10) before falling to Eastern Illinois, 3-0 (19-30, 27-30, 24-30).
The event concludes on Saturday, as Maine faces Boston College (2 p.m.) and Portland State (7 p.m.).
In Maine’s opening game against Fairfield, junior Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) paced the Black Bears with 17 kills. Senior Carmen Morgan (Watson, Saskatchewan) notched a triple-double with 12 kills, 13 assists and 14 digs while sophomore Jody Connacher (Spokane, Wash.) had a game-high 39 digs. In the fifth game, Maine tallied nine kills and hit .444 as a team.
The Stags were led by freshman Kelly Oliver, who recorded 17 kills. Junior Lauren Laramore chipped in with 30 digs.
In the evening’s final contest, Eastern Illinois got past the Black Bears in three games, behind 17 kills from senior Erica Gerth. The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 edge after hitting .432 as a team in game one. Jordan led Maine with 11 kills and 12 digs. Senior Brittany Howe (Columbia, Maine) added 16 digs. Playing in their first contests of the season, the Black Bears were making their debut under new head coach Lynn Theehs.
Men’s Soccer
Army 2, Maine 0
At Orono, senior forward John Kubeika scored off a pass from defender Pierre Hines to seal the game for Army.
Bill Watts netted the first goal, with an assist from Lloyd Osafo. Matt Wesmiller made five stops on nine shots as Army moved to 1-0.
Chad Mongeon saved six of 11 shots for the 0-1 Black Bears.
