FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Kasey Spencer scored just 3:06 after the opening whistle to lead the University of Maine field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Fairfield Friday.
Amie Dubois and Shaunessy Saucier had the other goals for the 3-2 Black Bears. Junior Jamie Morin made two saves on six shots for her first career shutout.
Lauren Callahan stopped nine of 14 shots for 1-4 Fairfield University.
Volleyball
Maine drops two
At Kalamazoo, Mich., junior Kaili Jordan had 23 kills in two games, but it wasn’t enough as Western Michigan beat Maine 30-22, 30-23, 30-20 and Marquette also took a win against the Black Bears 30-25, 30-25, 30-20 in the Radisson Invitational.
In the first game, Ashley Schatzle had 12 kills and five digs for 4-1 Western Michigan. Shaylen Jackson had 11 kills and Schea Fissell added seven digs.
Shelly Seipp had 25 shot assists for the Black Bears. Jordan had seven digs and Jody Connacher had eight digs.
In the second game, Sarah Vernon had 15 kills and 34 set assists for 3-1 Marquette. Caitie O’Brien had 13 digs and Erin Freer added 12 digs.
Connacher had 10 digs for 1-5 Maine and Carmen Morgan had seven digs wit 14 set assists. Shannan Fotter had six kills.
Women’s soccer
Hofstra 2, Maine 1 (1 OT)
At Harwich, Mass., freshman Allison Hobson converted a Marie Curtin rebound with seven seconds left in the first overtime as Hofstra University (N.Y.) dealt Maine its first loss in their ECAC Cape Cod Classic opener.
Nina Nanavrakis staked Hofstra to a 1-0 lead off an Emma Kilduff pass late in the first half but Maine’s Heather Hathorn equalized with 15 minutes left in regulation. It was Hathorn’s fifth goal of the season.
Becky Washsberger made six saves for 3-2-1 Hofstra while Maine’s Tanya Adorno finished with two stops.
Maine faces Cal Poly on Sunday at noon.
