Migrant education

Misinformation was reported in the editorial, “Migrant education costs” (BDN, Aug. 28-29).

The editorial stated: “The department [of education] for many years outsourced oversight of the migrant program to SAD 31 in Danforth.” This is incorrect; the Department of Education has always directly managed and monitored the Migrant Education program in the state of Maine.

The contract that SAD 14 had with the DOE was to provide resources for migrant education programs across the state as directed by the Maine Department of Education. All guidelines and criteria for migrant eligibility were determined and training provided directly by the Department of Education, not by any contractor as implied by the editorial.

The oversight of the Migrant Education program has always been at the Department of Education in Augusta.

William Dobbins

Superintendent of schools

SAD 14

Danforth
