Head Start registration

Penquis CAP Head Start, a preschool program for children age 3 to 5, is registering children for the 2004-2005 school year. The program is free to income-eligible families.

Head Start operates four hours daily, four days a week, September through May, in centers throughout Penobscot and Piscataquis counties. The program provides children with activities to help them develop mentally, socially, emotionally and physically. It also offers medical and dental exams, immunizations, developmental screenings and nutrition services. To apply for services, call 973-3537.

‘Teaching with Me’

BANGOR – The television stations of Maine PBS will introduce viewers to Sherri Gould, recently named Maine Teacher of the Year 2005, when “Teaching with Me” airs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25.

Gould teaches English at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport and was honored earlier this month at a ceremony with Gov. John Baldacci.

Gould said she cannot recall a time in her life when she was not focused on becoming a teacher. She takes her responsibility as an educator for teenagers very seriously. “A teacher affects eternity: he can never tell where his influence ends,” she said.

Last spring, Maine PBS spent a day tracking the 11 finalists vying for the title of Maine Teacher of the Year. The result is the television special, “Teaching with Me,” that documents the winner of the award plus highlights other selected finalists.

“Teaching with Me” is aimed at honoring the efforts of all dedicated educators who teach children. The program is an opportunity to witness how teachers communicate with and gain inspiration from their students.

“Teaching with Me” will be rebroadcast at 3:30 and 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26. To obtain more information about the program, visit www.mainepbs.org.

Hampden play school

HAMPDEN – Child development classes at Hampden Academy will operate a play school for area children who are between the ages of 3 and 5.

The program will run one to two hours three mornings a week from mid-September through the end of January.

The program offers students studying child development the opportunity to observe children and to practice effective ways of caring for children. It offers young children a safe and well-supervised learning environment.

Susquehanna University

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Katie Meyer of Bangor will intern this fall at Family Medical Care in Lewisburg, Pa. She is a senior psychology major at Susquehanna University.

Meyer will shadow a physician’s assistant during her internship to learn about the responsibilities of the profession she plans to pursue.

Meyer, the daughter of Harry and JoAnne Meyer, is a 2001 Bangor High School graduate.

Christian College Fair

The scholarship committee of Coastal Christian School has expanded its annual Christian College Fair to a second location. Fairs will take place 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Family Life Center, First Baptist Church, Waldoboro.

A second fair will be held 6-9 p.m. at Bangor Christian School, Bangor.

Both fairs will feature workshops on topics of interest to potential students and their parents. More than 25 Christian colleges will send representatives to the fairs. There is no admission charge to either fair.
