Many of the 100 or so worshippers who fill the pews each Sunday in summer won’t be in Cherryfield for the biggest moment in 150 years for St. Michael’s Catholic Church. The congregation will celebrate its 150th anniversary Wednesday with a special Mass and potluck supper. Fittingly, the day of celebration falls on the Feast of St. Michael. The Rev. Michael Sheridan (photo) and some longtime church members have made a special point this year to welcome many of the area’s Hispanic Catholics. In addition to making Masses more inclusive for the Spanish speakers, the church last month hosted a fiesta, complete with Mexican food, to signal the end of the blueberry harvest. This is the second landmark celebration for the Holy Name Parish, which includes St. Michael’s and stretches to Machias and the Holy Name of Jesus Church there. The Holy Name church a year ago this month marked its 175th birthday.
