MMA posts first victory Mariners win Admiral’s Cup

CASTINE – Former Bangor High School standout Buddy Nickerson rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown as Maine Maritime Academy downed Massachussetts Maritime 32-27 in New England Football Conference play Saturday.

The win marked the first time in seven years Maine Maritime has won the Admiral’s Cup, which is presented to the winning team in this rivalry.

Quarterback Patrick Bard added 136 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and went 3 of 7 passing with two touchdowns as the Mariners improved their record to 1-2.

Cody Schmidt had a pair of touchdown catches for MMA, which scored 26 points in the second quarter to take a 26-14 halftime lead. The Mariners extended their lead to 32-14 before 0-3 Mass. Maritime scored a pair of late touchdowns.

Chris Tracey, Dan Rosen and Nate Bolduc led the Mariners’ defense with seven tackles each as MMA outgained Mass. Maritime 443-274 in total yardage.

Williams 21, Colby 10

At Williamstown, Mass., host Williams College jumped out to a 15-0 lead and held on to defeat Colby in a season-opening New England Small College Athletic Conference contest.

Colby pulled to within 15-10 on an 8-yard scoring run by Nial DeMena and a 21-yard field goal by John Goss, but Williams put the game away on a 2-yard run by Cory Catelli with 10:55 left in the game.

Colby quarterback Justin Smith completed 21 of 40 passes for 169 yards, but also threw two interceptions and was sacked three times. DeMena rushed for 52 yards for the Mules, while Tom Wilson caught seven passes for 54 yards and had 35 rushing yards.

Middlebury 31, Bowdoin 17

At Middlebury, Vt., the host Panthers took advantage of six Bowdoin College to earn the NESCAC win.

Mike Keenan completed 22 of 37 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns for Middlebury, while Dom DiDomenico rushed for 119 yards and two scores and Tom Cleaver caught seven passes for 124 yards.

Bowdoin was led by 201 yards passing from Ricky Leclerc, while Rob Patchett rushed for 75 yards.

At Hartford, Conn., Drew Finkeldey rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns to lead host Trinity to its 15th straight victory.

Trinity is ranked No. 4 in New England Division III and boasts the longest current Division III winning streak in the country.

Freshman Ron DiGravio of Farmington led Bates with 51 rushing yards on 13 carries.
