Correcting the record

A story Wednesday on seaweed harvesting in the Jonesport-Beals area indicated that the state Department of Marine Resources approved a harvesting plan submitted by Acadian Seaplants of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Acadian provided DMR with a copy of the plan, but DMR does not have statutory authority to approve or disapprove seaweed harvesting plans.

A headline in the July 10 “Mainely Motorsports” ad-vertising supplement incorrectly identified the race manager at Unity Raceway. He is Dan Ayotte. The article also contained a misspelled name in the byline in some editions. The article was written by Sports reporter Jessica Bloch. Both errors were made by an editor.

The Associated Press reported erroneously in a story published in Wednesday’s paper that Chief Justice Leigh Saufley of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court wrote the majority opinion in a 1997 case that said the supervision of clergy is a religious matter and court scrutiny would violate the constitutional separation of church and state. Daniel Wathen, the court’s former chief justice, wrote that decision.
