Correcting the record

An editing change in a story in the State section on July 1 about a settlement reached in a civil lawsuit in which the fired public works director for Van Buren sought compensation for breach of contract, among other things, made the story in error. Robert Learnard, now a member of the Town Council and who was public works director from 1996 to March 2000, sought and won $130,000 in back wages and damages for being fired from his job. All other claims between Learnard, the town, its town manager and town councilors at the time were terminated by the settlement, including one in which Learnard alleged that Town Manager Larry Cote broke into his camp.
