The Bangor Daily News was established and first published on June 18, 1889 by several New York newspaper men, organized as the Union Publishing Company. The principal stockholder was Thomas J. Stewart. In 1895, J. Norman Towle purchased the paper. Publishers since 1895: J. Norman Towle (1895-1930), Fred Jordan (1930-1947), Lillis Towle Jordan (1947-1955), Richard K. Warren (1955-1984), Richard J. Warren (1984- ). Richard J. Warren is the great-grandson of J. Norman Towle.
