Correcting the record

In a story on Page 1 in the Bangor Daily News on July 10 about the rise of parental concerns over online videos, The Associated Press described how a Maine mother witnessed her children encountering homemade video clips on the Internet that included nudity and animal cruelty. The story should have specified that those graphic videos were on public Internet sites, rather than on “Zoey’s Room,” a restricted cyberspace community that aims to be a safe haven for girls and where the mother had enrolled her daughter.

A story on Saturday’s State page about a memorial service for Charlie Howard requires clarification. It should have emphasized that Anne Clark of Bangor believes Howard died because of intolerance rather than arrogance and ignorance; that children’s ideas about life are shaped at home and children can take on their parents’ fears; and that diversity needs to be made available in formal education, even if the instruction opportunity is one-on-one.
