Due to an editing error, a story on page B1 of Wednesday’s newspaper on the efforts to create Regional School Unit 17 in northern Penobscot County misstated the requirements of a state law. The law requires participating municipalities to contribute 2 mils to the new school unit. A mil is a measure of property tax equivalent to $1 per $1,000 of valuation.

A story about the sentencing of Anthony Cotrone on a misdemeanor assault charge that ran on page B4 on Feb. 22 requires a correction and clarification. Cotrone was not intoxicated on Sept 29, 2007, when he got into an altercation with another man near Margarita’s Restaurant in Orono. Cotrone, a former football player at the University of Maine who graduated in December 2007, told the judge that he only struck the victim in self-defense after he was followed 100 feet down an alley and was hit first from behind.

A story on page A1 of Wednesday’s paper about obtaining passports contained an error. As of Jan. 31, U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling by land and sea must present either a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, when crossing the border. A passport or passport card will not be required until a later date to be determined.
