Correcting the record

A story that ran on Page B1 of the State section in Tuesday’s paper misspelled the last name of a Houlton couple arrested by Orono police on drug charges. Oliver Cromwell and his wife Carol Cromwell, both 33, were charged with possession of heroin.

Due to a production error, the following lines were omitted from a story on Page 1 of Wednesday’s paper about the homicide case of Joyce McLain: Her body was found two days later in a power line clearing about 200 feet from the school’s soccer fields. Her head and neck had been struck repeatedly with a blunt object. Several suspects have been investigated, but no arrests have been made and the case remains open with state police. Hosted by John Walsh, “America’s Most Wanted” is a half-hour program dedicated to the capture of wanted felons, the solving of unsolved crimes and the recovery of lost or missing people.

A story on Page B6 in Wednesday’s paper about the death of Eileen Slocum, considered Newport, R.I.’s grande dame, was missing some information. The final sentences should have read: “Slocum was born in 1915 in New York City, the daughter of banker Lawrence Gillespie. She married John Slocum, a journalist and diplomat, in 1940. He died in 1997.
